“SEO” stands for “Search Engine Optimization” and in a distilled way, it focuses on organic search engine results. Through an algorithm and system of analytics, when you look for an answer in Google, Bing, Yahoo or DuckDuckGo your results are shaped by SEO. For example, do a Google search for “small business marketing near me” and see what populates. The result will include millions of sites, but the important part of this exercise is understanding how and why your search brought you these results and in which order.

Search engines respond to questions with relevant answers. A website’s popularity is based on whether the page contains useful information to a searcher. How do search engines know if information is useful or relevant to the searcher?

Through formulas that browse the content of a page, search engines scan for content-rich pages. The algorithms are finely tuned to disregard any words deemed unnecessary or excessive. The formula then attributes a score based on what it finds. The higher the score, the more power your pages receives, and the more power your page receives, the higher it lands on the list of results from a search engine inquiry.
